Job Description

We are looking for a Research Analyst to join the Grid Edge research team within Wood Mackenzie’s Energy Transition Practice. The Grid Edge team consists of leading analysts covering some of the most cutting-edge topics in the energy transition, including transportation and building electrification, microgrids, distributed energy resource participation in wholesale and retail markets, demand flexibility, and grid modernization and decentralization. Our research and thought leadership inform the strategies of key players throughout the energy industry, driving innovative business models while hastening the energy transition.

The Analyst is expected to conduct original grid edge research and deliver analysis through written reports, public speaking, client engagement, and occasional consulting projects. As a subject matter expert, the Analyst will be a public face of Wood Mackenzie and the Grid Edge team, providing thought leadership through editorials, conference presentations, and media engagement.

The Analyst will take ownership of microgrid and distribution automation research. Research subtopics include microgrid controls, behind-the-meter generation, grid sensors and switchgear, and voltage, fault, and outage management. The Analyst will establish and maintain relationships with microgrid and BTMG developers, distribution automation technology providers, and both utilities and facilities owners who deploy these technologies. They will leverage these relationships, along with independent research, to develop data-driven, actionable insights that advance the business models of these actors while informing investors in the space.

Responsibilities

· Be the team’s subject matter expert in microgrids and distribution automation, including

1. Microgrid controls, assets, and use cases

2. Behind-the-meter generation (BTMG), including diesel and natural gas generators, CHP, fuel cells, and batteries

3. Grid sensors, switchgear, and other distribution automation equipment

4. Voltage, fault, and outage management

· Track and report on microgrid and distribution automation deployments and outcomes

· Track and report on the commercial landscape of microgrid developers and distribution automation technology providers, including investment, M&A activity, business models, and competitive advantage

· Establish and maintain relationships with key industry stakeholders, checking in regularly to gather project and commercial developments

· Produce research reports and other thought leadership that provides actionable insights for developers, technology providers, utilities, and investors

· Publish timely insights and editorials on technology, market, policy, and regulatory developments

· Contribute to recurring teamwide reports, including our U.S. DER Outlook and Grid Edge Quarterly Executive Briefing

· Contribute to demand flexibility forecasts through BTMG involvement

· Provide direct feedback and guidance to Grid Edge clients upon request

· Occasionally support the Energy Transition Practice’s consulting team on grid edge-related engagements

· Present at Wood Mackenzie and external conferences, moderate panels, and host webinars

· Collaborate with other members of the Grid Edge team, as well as other Wood Mackenzie technology and power teams, on joint research projects and reports

· Assist with customer acquisition, retention, and relationship management

· Assist with internal data and model infrastructure development and management

· Travel infrequently, but as necessary, to clients and conferences

Qualifications

· 3+ years of experience in the energy industry, or in energy policy or technology research

· A background in power systems, including power flow, distribution equipment, and distribution management

· Knowledge of microgrids and common BTMG technologies, including diesel, CHP, battery storage, and fuel cells

· A bachelor’s degree, and preferably a master’s degree, in social, physical, or environmental science, or policy

· A self-learner, capable of getting up to speed on technical, financial, and regulatory subjects

· Good working knowledge of Excel and the ability to produce clear, documented models

· Understanding of both the customer and the utility’s side of electricity, including interconnection, rates, and demand response

· Strong research abilities, with the ability to mine public datasets, regulatory filings, financial disclosures, secondary research reports, and media reports

· Strong interpersonal skills, necessary to engage effectively with industry stakeholders

· A problem-solving instinct and a readiness to connect dots, form hypotheses and confirm them with data

· Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to distill complex relationships at the intersection of technology, energy, and finance into clear, actionable research

· Excellent organizational skills, able to balance long-term research projects with near-term publications, client questions, and team development initiatives

· Ability and willingness to work with a distributed team 

Nice to haves

· Hands-on engineering experience with microgrids or distribution automation technologies

· Experience working with or in utility operations teams, particularly smart grid groups

· Energy management experience at a commercial or industrial facility

· Understanding of retail and wholesale demand response, their economics, and their requirements

· Software and cloud experience, including python coding, source control, and SQL

Location

We welcome applicants who could work out of our Chicago, Boston, Houston, or New York offices, but will consider remote applicants based anywhere in the United States or Canada.
