Company Overview:

Relativity is the first and only company to automate aerospace manufacturing by integrating intelligent robotics, software, and proprietary metal 3D printing technology. Disrupting 60 years of aerospace, Relativity offers a radically simplified supply chain, building a rocket with 100x fewer parts in less than 60 days. Our long-term goal is to upgrade humanity’s industrial base on Earth and on Mars.

Team:

The Propulsion team at Relativity Space is responsible for the design, development, testing, and manufacturing of Relativity’s entirely 3D printed rocket engines. As a part of this team, you will help build, create, and iterate on the full product lifecycle of our Aeon-1 and Aeon-R engine systems. Unique to Relativity, you will get to work across many teams to iterate and support Relativity's first-of-its-kind 3D printing software and robotics technology. This team is critical to the launch success of Terran 1 and the development of Terran R, among many other firsts!

What you’ll do:

This position will lead structural analyses for engine development and provide guidance to responsible engineers and designers within the propulsion team. You will perform detailed thermal and structural analysis of propulsion system components using finite element analysis (FEA) and hand calculations. You will work closely with propulsion and vehicle teams to design engine hardware for structural integrity, life, performance, weight, and cost requirements. In order to be successful in this role, you should be someone who thrives in ambiguity and is able to lead their own projects into completion.

The responsibilities of this role include:

  • Stress analysis (linear and non-linear, including plasticity and contacts)
  • Thermal analysis (convective heat transfer boundary condition development)
  • Dynamic analysis (including transient, harmonic, random vibration, shock, rigid and flexible body dynamics)
  • Fatigue, fracture, and damage tolerance analysis
  • Improving and streamlining thermal and structural analysis methods and best practices

What you need to know:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering field
  • 1+ years of experience in structural analysis
  • Strong understanding of fundamentals of solid mechanics and statics (thermal/mechanical)
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and commercial tools such as Ansys, Abaqus, or Nastran
  • Strong drive to deliver on ambitious schedules

Nice to haves but not required – if you do not meet all of these criteria, you should still apply:

  • Graduate degree in an engineering field
  • 3+ years of experience in structural analysis
  • Experience with nonlinear finite element analysis: plasticity and creep
  • Experience with structural dynamics: rigid and flexible body dynamics, modal, random vibration, rotordynamics
  • Experience in thermal analysis modeling and boundary condition development
  • Experience with regeneratively cooled combustion chamber, fluid system, and heat exchanger design and analysis
  • Experience with fatigue, fracture, and damage tolerance analysis
  • Experience presenting analytical results and making suggestions for design or performance improvements

We believe varied perspectives & backgrounds strengthen our team. Prior experience in aerospace is not required.

Relativity Space offers competitive salary and equity, a generous vacation policy, an annual Learning & Development stipend and more!

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
