Overview

BigBear.ai is seeking a Principal Technologist/Lead Data Scientist to perform two distinct functions; 1) serve as the principal technical lead to support business, growth, and development for the C&E Sector in all data science and related opportunities and pursuits, and 2) will be the principal technical lead to support innovation, research & development to expand the C&E Sector's technical portfolio. Furthermore, the Principal Technologist/Lead Data Scientist will work as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) across BigBear.ai sectors and products teams on cyber related opportunities and projects. This position is based out of Columbia, MD with the opportunity for partial remote work.

What you will do

The role of a Principal Technologist/Lead Data Scientist is very dynamic, ranging from leading short and long-term research projects, contributing to product improvements, and developing solution architectures to address technical challenges. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a collaborative environment and capable of providing innovative thought leadership, mentoring, and problem solving across a diverse range of technologies that include CNO, Cybersecurity, and Data Analytics. The candidate must demonstrate a broad expertise in Data Science (DS), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) solutions deployed in a variety of environments ranging from small deployments on the tactical edge to enterprise class solutions deployed in the cloud.

Roles and responsibilities of the position include:

  • Responsible for technical thought leadership, defining technical strategy, understanding market/customer needs, and applying subject matter expertise as the sector lead for a data science and artificial intelligence.
  • Evaluates new technology, providing recommendations and solutions integrating said technology in our services and capabilities.
  • Review industry leading technologies and industry best practices. As an expert in a technological field, meets with customers to understand technical requirements, state of current environment, and mission.
  • Works with operational business-area leads to define and understand business needs and to translate these needs into a system design resulting in a successful solution.
  • Work in conjunction with other technical leaders work to create, maintain, and publish methodologies, approaches, and best practices in support of our key business areas.
  • Responsible for putting together end to end solutions for pursuits, comfortable with ambiguity, brings a proven track record of successful program executions and capture efforts, and is driven to grow the business with technical excellence in all arenas.
  • Collaborate with other technical teams in the exchange and transfer of corporate technical knowledge and in the development and evolution of architecture standards, guidelines, reference architectures, and proposed opportunity-specific technology road-maps; and performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Participate as a technical expert in pre-sales qualification.
  • Work closely with Proposal Managers, Capture Managers, Project Managers and Program Managers in the design development, and implementation of the technical content defined in the Statement of Work.
  • Serves as the organization's primary solutions architect for data science opportunities. Develop white papers, develop responses for request for information (RFIs), and serve as the overall technical lead or writer on proposal responses, identifying and solutioning technical, functional, and security requirements.
  • Effective communicator, a strong collaborator across a broad spectrum of stakeholders, and able to lead a diverse and dispersed team of professionals.
  • Provide counseling/coaching, oversight, and support for delivery teams and staff
  • Actively participate in staff recruitment and retention activities providing input and guidance into the staffing process.


What you need to have

  • Clearance: must possess and maintain a TS w/ Polygraph
  • Master's degree or PhD in a qualified data science or engineering field from an accredited college or university with a minimum experience of 10 years in data analytics research and development
  • Demonstrated experience with technical leadership, and leading a team of developers and researchers
  • Demonstrated success supporting the growth and business development of a company through proposals, white papers, and other technical or competitive endeavors
  • Ability to analyze and think quickly in a research-oriented team to generate results
  • Experience with successful Agile techniques
  • Ability to work with and lead a team


What we'd like you to have

  • The ability to develop solutions that process and analyze cyber data sources, such as packet capture (PCAP), network scans, netflow, log data, threat intelligence and monitoring, and vulnerability reports.
  • The ability to identify and acquire data sources (cyber) for analytical systems, conduct exploratory data analysis, and develop prototype and proof of concept capabilities.
  • The ability to provide big data engineering and pipeline management, providing collection, Extract/Transform/Load (ETL), storage, exploratory data analysis, and data governance.
  • The ability to collect multiple data sources into a central repository and developing analytics and insights from multi-source data and intelligence.
  • The ability to apply knowledge of ML and AI to develop systems that provide novel insights and decision support.
  • The ability to implement ML Operations (MLOps) to automate the build/train/test and deployment of ML models.
  • The ability to develop advanced data visualizations and UI/UX capabilities to provide decision support to operators and analyst.
  • The ability to design and implement deployment plans that include the underlying infrastructure (cloud, on premise, hybrid) to support deployed analytics at varying scales (small, low SWAP, large, enterprise).
