The Machine Learning and Data Infrastructure (MLI) group builds the infrastructure that covers the entire lifecycle of ML development and Data intensive applications, all the way from data collection, data mining, data labeling, data validation/visualization, large scale data processing, model training, model evaluation to model deployment. The goal of the MLI group is to greatly accelerate ML and Data workflows and improve the productivity of ML practitioners, data scientists and Data engineers with scalable infrastructure and self-service platforms.
As a Principal Software Engineer on this team, you will be the driving force behind a wide variety of initiatives including building a scalable compute platform that supports distributed training application and large scale data processing systems and orchestration system that enables creating machine learning and data workflows. This dedicated expert will guide the MLI group as it works closely with Cruise’s AV teams, systems engineering, Machine Learning Platform, Capacity and Efficiency teams. Bending the cost curve while offering a solid compute platform that enables AI innovation at Cruise and achieving affordable productivity is the exciting challenge in this area.
What you'll be doing:
- Guide and set the technical aspects of the R&D agenda for the ML Infrastructure group
- Formulate and design solutions for problems that target top MLI opportunities
- Collaborate with the teams, product partners, technical leadership, QA, and internal stakeholders to plan and execute engineering roadmaps, review and guide technical designs, and deliver high-quality products on time
- Work with Cruise’s technical leadership to set and propagate best-in-class engineering design and development practices within the teams, accelerating engineering velocity
- Collaboratively identify and close gaps in MLI to enable Cruise’s engineers to train, evaluate, and deploy ML models in a highly scalable, automated way in a way that bends the cost curve and achieves higher efficiency.
- Hire, mentor, and motivate exceptional teams of engineers responsible for designing, developing, and supporting products for testing autonomous vehicle software
- Be a culture leader within Cruise, exemplifying our values and maintaining sharp focus on our mission
- Possess a creative problem solving and continuous improvement mindset which leaves everything you touch better that it was before
What you must have:
- BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
- Passion for safe, fully-electric, self-driving technology and its upcoming impact on the world
- Passion for learning new technology every day in a company with many, possibly-unfamiliar, cross-discipline skill sets ranging from assembly line auto manufacturing to cutting edge ML/AI training
- Ability to lead with cross-functional communication and collaboration skills
- A customer service mindset, keeping a tight loop with internal users of MLI tools and services, actively seeking out requirements, and adapting engineering designs to align with evolving needs
- Ability to concisely and clearly present written documents and live presentations to executive leadership and Cruise as a whole
- 10+ years of experience as an engineering leader; recruiting, training, leading, and retaining the best talent
- 10+ years of industry experience in building and architecting large-scale, production quality backend systems, especially in applied machine learning or data pipeline
- Proven success in detail-oriented test plan design and execution
- Clear track record of effective written and oral communication, tight collaboration with internal partners, and continuous delivery of quality results
