About This Role

LivePerson is growing fast, and we want our technology to keep up. We’ve formed a team that’s focused on evolving our database and data storage systems and how they’re used by application teams so we can scale faster than ever before. We’re seeking a Principal Database Engineer to help define how we accomplish this goal, and to help us achieve it.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Evolve and optimize enterprise-grade Kafka topologies as organizational utilization grows.
  • Address performance and scalability challenges posed by new or changing Kafka producers and consumers.
  • Implement solutions to monitor Kafka components to proactively address any Kafka messaging issues.
  • Conduct multi-environment capacity planning.
  • Identify and implement best practices to support a highly-available deployment (considerations include business continuity/disaster recovery, backup and restoration, repartitioning, zero-outage upgrades, etc).
  • Develop and exercise automated infrastructure testing to ensure Kafka configuration changes or upgrades are not detrimental to Kafka-integrating applications.
  • Provide in-depth expertise on evolving Kafka capabilities.
  • Educating-other engineers on best practices for the above activities; Mentoring other engineers to help develop the next generation of Principal engineers at LivePerson.
  • Advocating for solutions that help teams launch quality software without compromising delivery speed

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent training or work experience
  • 10+ years of equivalent professional experience building microservice software at scale
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience working on Unix/Linux operating systems and shell scripting (CentOS, RedHat)
  • 3-4+ years fo solid experience installing, configuring, administering, monitoring and troubleshooting Confluent (preferably) or Apache Kafka
  • Deep understanding of technical capabilities offered through Kafka
  • Hands-on experience with automation-centric scripting and /or tooling such as Ansible, Terraform, Chef or Puppet

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience creating architectures that scale with volume and are fault-tolerant
  • Familiarity with distributed systems & asynchronous messaging
  • Experience tuning distributed systems & software to improve their performance under increasing volumes of traffic
  • Experience developing cloud software services and an understanding of design for scalability, performance and reliability, in both private and public cloud environments
  • Proven ability to dive deep with problems another team is facing and help them identify short-term mitigations and long-term plans to overcome those problems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with proven ability to adapt communication style to technical, non-technical, and executive audiences
  • Proven ability to influence without authority up through the VP level
  • Proven ability to work in a fully remote environment with people across the globe
  • Relevant certifications are a plus (e.g AWS Certification, Google Cloud Platform Certification
