This Open Source Data Engineer is responsible for building innovation open source data solutions. This role involves building solutions and being an open source advocate. This role will involve developing open source solutions in Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) development, storage engineering, data warehousing, data provisioning, data task automation, and other similar tasks. Responsibilities may include Platform-as-a-Service and Cloud solutions with a focus on data stores and associated eco systems.
Duties may include management of design services, providing sizing and configuration assistance, ensuring strict data quality, and performing industry and organizational needs assessments. Analyzes current business practices, processes and procedures as well as identifying future open source opportunities for leveraging data storage and retrieval system capabilities. Manages relationships with internal and external parties to advocate for open source data software and hardware. May design schemas, write SQL, automate data processes, and more to support development of a strong data engineering solutions portfolio in the UHG Open Source Program Office.
A primary requirement for this role is active and enthusiastic participation in open source development. The majority of the solutions developed in this role will be delivered through Github to the public open source community. Our open source community is a group of dedicated developers and engineers working toward positive disruption in the healthcare and technology industries. Primary Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrate strong skills in Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL), Kafka, SQL, and Cloud Storage.
  • Demonstrate strong skills 2 of the following: 1) design data schemas,
  • Evaluate the business and open source ecosystems for opportunities within data engineering to advance our open source agenda, staying atop trends in the field and community in open source forums (e.g., Linux Foundation, Github, Cloud Native Computing Foundation).
  • Develop and independently manage data solutions from inception through end-of-life, with a focus on long-cycle project planning and implementation
  • Maintain existing open source projects authored by other individuals in Github
  • Engage in data engineering-based skill training and expansion to become a "jack of all trades"
  • Develop strong documentation for open source solutions using Github, microsites, etc.
  • Ensure high - quality and frequent releases of data-related code to open source communities
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrate a curiosity and passion to learn and grow.
  • Communicate you work and progress in agile fashion, making regular incremental process on activities.
  • Manage a workload of several projects.
  • Engage with developer communities and support the open source office as a technical advocate, supporting other projects effectively
  • Manages relationships with internal and external parties to advocate for open source data software and hardware.

Required Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of SQL development
  • 2+ years of experience with Python
  • 1-2 years of experience with Data Wrangling
  • 1-2 years of experience with Data Visualization
  • Experience acquiring metrics and generating definitions from raw data
  • Superior attention to detail
  • Excellent documentation standards, including README and process documentation (e.g., data flows)
  • Experience with ETL
  • Actively generating new open-source projects in the engineering space
  • Experience automating data flows and jobs

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Documented open-source contribution record on Github
  • 1-2 years of experience with Go
  • 1-2 years of experience with Rust
  • 1-2 years of experience with R
  • Automating or creating ML/AI
  • 1-2 years of experience Kubernetes
  • 1-2 years of experience with CI/CD Automation
  • 1+ years of experience with Scala, Java, or C#

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $64,800 to $116,000. The salary range for Connecticut/Nevada residents is $71,400 to $127,400. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
