Do you want to create world-class machine learning solutions collaboratively with the world's top experts? This Open Source Engineer is responsible for building innovative open source solutions across machine learning and MLOps. This role involves building solutions, being a prolific open source contributor, being an open source advocate, and being a corporate culture advocate.
The ideal candidate demonstrates ability to quickly learn and appropriately apply new technologies to solve engineering problems in the open source space. They will be proficient in Git, including Github. The ideal candidate is curious, congenial, and captivating. They will have a bias for action and be a polished speaker, They will seek out challenges and tackle them vigor. They will be a superior technologist and communicator able to deliver complex ideas with ease. They will be proficient at managing technical solutions from conception to the end of the product life cycle. They will be able to motivate and influence others without authority. They will be seeking to develop new ML solutions for healthcare technology and able to grow a supportive community to partner in that effort. The ideal candidate has an established track record of growing technical projects in the open source space from ideas to publicly-maintained communities.
They will design, develop, and implements solutions that exemplify modern software engineering practices. They will be experts with reuse of code and will be able to develop complex solutions with reuse in mind. They will implement and continuously improve agile software delivery, code management, and operations practices. They will mentor junior team members in modern ML practices, technologies, and patterns. They will own the technical debt backlog and high level plan. They will maintain current perspective on technology trends, applying that to personal and team capability growth. They will actively participate in code review and interviewing new candidates. They will grow a prolific open source technical community of contributors and develop quality external contributions through projects hosted on Github.
A primary requirement for this role is active and enthusiastic participation in open source development and communities. The majority of the solutions developed in this role will be delivered through Github to the public open source community. Our open source community is a group of dedicated developers and engineers working toward positive disruption in the healthcare and technology industries. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Prolifically contribute to open source ML healthcare technologies
  • Design and implement OSPO product features in collaboration with IT stakeholders
  • Implement best practices and coding standards for projects
  • Build new open source ML healthcare technologies
  • Develop/deliver a strategic roadmap that open sources non-proprietary internal UHG methods and techniques

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of progressive software engineering and ML/AI experience
  • 3+ years various frameworks (e.g. Splunk, ELK, etc.)
  • 3+ years with ML/AI (e.g., R, Python, SAS)
  • 2+ years various MLOps (e.g., kafka, bigdate, ETL, etc.)
  • 1+ years CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Jenkins)
  • Experience with software programming languages (at least 3) or 1 + years REST API design (including micro-services)
  • Experience with engineering platforms at scale in public + private clouds
  • Experience designing technical product roadmaps
  • Experience managing teams in a matrix organization and influencing without authority
  • Demonstrated experience hosting Github repositories
  • Demonstrated history of innovative solution building in the healthcare technology space


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 + years of experience as a full stack developer (UI/UX, API, DB ORM interfaces etc.)
  • 1 + years of experience with javascript, Node.js
  • 1 + years REST API design (including micro-services)
  • 1 + years CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Jenkins)
  • 1 + years' experience with container technologies (e.g. Azure, GCP, Kubernetes, AWS)
  • 1+ years security frameworks (e.g. Layer7, Kong, PingFederate, etc.)
  • Experience with event/data driven architecture and technologies
  • Experience working across fully automated stacks in a CI/CD ecosystem
  • Experience managing an open source program office
  • Experience managing a technology advocate program

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $82,100 to $146,900. The salary range for Connecticut / Nevada residents is $90,500 to $161,600. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
