We are looking for a Lunar Geotechnical Scientist to join our team. Do you have the following skills?

The Lunar Geotechnical Scientist will:

  • Develop and deploy tests and technology evaluation protocols for lunar dust mitigation
  • Develop, acquire, and provide planetary simulant products and services for testing, analysis, evaluation, and collection of scientific and geotechnical data in Simulant Development Laboratory
  • Facilitate discussions and transfer information between engineering and lunar science groups
  • Develop funding proposals for submission to relevant scientific and technology grant solicitations opportunities
  • Investigate science mission operations concepts, software tools, and methodologies for lunar and Mars mission scenarios
  • Provide lunar mission science services to a range of human exploration organizations including Gateway, Orion, the lander/ascent systems, space suits, and EVA. Services to include expertise on lunar dust mitigation, lunar sample collection and handling, EVA science operations and objectives, and the inclusion of science community requirements into flight systems
  • Support Earth and planetary science training and curriculum development for professionals (astronauts, scientists, engineers, managers) in the classroom and in the field
  • Perform other duties required



Qualifications

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

  • BS degree from an accredited college or university in an associated technical discipline and four (4) years related experience, or MS degree in an associated technical discipline with two (2) years of related experience, or Ph.D. in an associated technical discipline.
  • Geotechnical and scientific laboratory experience
  • Ability to develop innovative work ideas and work without specific tasking
  • Proficient computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Office suite, file/image editing with Adobe products)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work on a team and lead tasks when necessary
  • Dedication and attentiveness to safety protocols when working in a laboratory



Requisition Preferences:

  • Bachelors, Masters or PhD degree in geoscience, lunar science, planetary science, geotechnical engineering, or relevant science/engineering fields with applicable experience
  • Use of analytical equipment, such as digital imaging microscope, particle size analyzers, lab balances, DSLR cameras
  • Use of industrial rock crushing equipment, geotechnical instruments, mixers, tumblers
  • Knowledge of granular material behaviors/geotechnical characteristics
  • Terrestrial, extraterrestrial, or fine particulate geologic material handling
  • Simulant material development and/or dust mitigation experience
  • Geoscience fieldwork, lab, image science, and/or remote sensing experience
  • Mission science integration and operations
  • Previous work with NASA and/or in the field of planetary geology

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on the task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of the time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of the time).

Equipment and Machines

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with the established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust the schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
