Job Description

The Retail Team for Data Science represents a huge part of Faire's two-sided marketplace. Retailers represent the buy-side users in our community and the data scientists under that umbrella are involved in solving a multitude of problems related to user growth & lifecycle, search & ranking, marketing, and more.

As the Director of this team, you will be able to help define the long-term vision & strategy; work effectively with cross functional stakeholders in Product, Engineering, Design, and Marketing; plan the overall roadmap and define priorities for the retailer space; and directly manage a growing team of Data Scientists and Machine Learning Engineers.

We are looking for a highly technical, hands-on, and mission-driven leader for our Retailer Data team to help us scale to the next level. As a Director reporting directly to the Head of Data, you will have significant purview and influence on the evolution of Faire’s community of hundreds of thousands of Retail users. Faire will soon be known as a top destination for data science and machine learning, and you will help take us there!

What you’ll be doing:

• Create the long-term vision and strategy for the Retailer Data Team in accordance with the overall pillar strategy
• Define the team scope and structure with clear ownership across team members and generate staffing/headcount plans accordingly
• Effectively represent Retailer Data in various company-wide and pillar-wide forums such as Tempo, product reviews, experimentation reviews, planning meetings, etc. 
• Create and implement effective processes and tools to drive strong execution of the team and deliver significant business impact in a sustainable manner
• Scale the team effectively to support continual business & company growth; develop first line tech leads and managers

What it takes:

• 6+ years experience in data science / ML related industry roles 
• 3+ years experience managing teams (ideally with teams larger than 10 members) 
• Experience hiring and developing individual contributors, tech leads, and other managers  
• Prior experience leading ranking/search/recommendation teams a big plus
• Strong communicator across both technical and non-technical teams
• High-level academic background in machine learning / statistics / operations research / economics preferred 
• Passionate about coaching and leading data scientists
• Passionate to keep up with the industry trends and continuously identify new tools to use to solve technical problems
• Experience building teams at a fast-growing startup a plus
