Summary

The Recommender Systems Team is responsible for making relevant and personalized customer experiences for Kroger's E-commerce site, which ranks among the top 10 e-commerce companies in the US. We deliver trillions of recommendations to the Kroger website at scale and make them available to millions of Kroger customers. Scale is the name of the game. The team has a rich portfolio of sciences which include product and coupon recommender systems, substitute recommendations, and shoppable recipes. We apply a multitude of advanced techniques such as deep learning, Matrix factorization, ML, and NLP to create our sciences. We are constantly learning and bettering our sciences and apply statistics for experimental design and AB testing. Measurement is our core value and all decisions in the product evolution are supported by data and evidence from experiments. As the manager of the team your responsibilities would include:

The Work

  • Recommender Systems Director (Data Science Function)
    • Own the Recommender Systems Development workplan, including prioritization of short-term initiatives and development of long-term innovation in partnership with cross functional product and engineering team
    • Manage, grow, and prioritize a backlog of solution development ideas to ensure we have a pipeline of opportunities to meet the evolving needs of the stakeholders
    • Building stakeholder relationships at a senior level at both at Kroger and 84.51°
    • Develop, maintain, and adjust a solution development process with clear ways of working and accountability expectations across functions within the broader business team
    • Design DSR workstream roadmap, assigned work according to the strengths and interests of the team members, coordinating efforts and tracking timelines
    • Identify and drive enhancement opportunities through scientific, process, and technology improvements

An ideal candidate has a strong track record of:

  • Building recommender systems at scale
  • Building stakeholder relationships at a senior level
  • Internal client exposure and strong understanding of client’s business needs
  • Managing, recruiting, training, developing, coaching, inspiring and/or leading others
  • Proven track record of working within a cross functional team to develop and implement a strategic data science roadmap
  • Successfully drive innovation project in partnership with stakeholders
  • Knowledge of deep learning and matrix factorization methods
  • Knowledge of MLOPS, Micro services, Spark, as well as understanding of cloud architecture, components, and services

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 2-3+ years leading recommender systems development at scale
  • Experience in experimentation and evaluation of recommender systems
  • Knowledge and management of data science products and lifecycle
  • Strong understanding of client’s business needs and ways to solve it within the recommender sciences solutions
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and relationship building skills
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment cross functional environment
  • 6+ years developing analytical solutions using advanced statistical methods and machine learning algorithms
  • 6+ years using R or Python to develop analytical solutions
  • 6+ years with data wrangling, data cleaning and prep, dimensionality reduction
  • Experience with managing, recruiting, training, developing, coaching, and/or inspiring highly technical associates
  • Ability to create computationally efficient solutions
  • Strong academic background in mathematics, statistics, computer science, economics, or similar discipline
  • Data visualization skills and ability to present technical solutions to non-technical audience
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong analytical, creative problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Strong business acumen
  • Passionate about data, analysis and insights
