Position Summary:

Directs and oversees the activities and development of the data platform's software components and development teams to build a forward-looking, resilient, and modular data platform. Responsible for creating and executing product roadmaps, manage development resources across multiple teams, and orchestrate production support for platform components. Interacts directly with all other functions, including DevOps, product development, QA, project management, marketing, and sales to ensure clear understanding of business and technical needs and timely delivery on customer requirements. Has full operational responsibility of the data platform software, performance, testing, and documentation. Recruits, coaches and develops, and evaluates personnel ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the data platform team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Has direct oversight and daily management of the Data Platform development team; assign resources to development tasks as needed
  • Architects and orchestrates development of solution architecture for components in the Data Platform
  • Responsible for setting and enforcing developer best practices and creating a modern and automated development environment
  • Creates and coordinates long-term platform roadmap with platform architects, product owners, and the Senior Director of Data Platform
  • Oversees production support for software components within domain
  • Works closely with other team leaders to ensure their needs are met timely in context of company and project goals and objectives
  • Analyzes and investigates requests, prepares design specifications, and oversees resource allocation and execution
  • Plans system capacity and maintenance in conjunction with the DevOps team
  • Cultivates and maintains a team and culture of high availability and responsiveness to address operational issues and emergent needs 24x7, in coordination with the DevOps team
  • Responsible for ensuring that department understands and complies with quality standards and security/data privacy requirements as documented.
  • Plans and manages resource capacity to ensure delivering on roadmap commitments.
  • Plans resources to execute new commitments and support current systems.


Required Qualifications:

  • 8-10 years of experience managing a multi-team, multiple component data platform
  • Understanding of high-level languages and frameworks (Java, Python, Kotlin, SpringBoot, etc)
  • Experience working in GCP and GCP components (GKE, PubSub, Google Cloud SQL, etc)
  • Understanding of service-based, event-driven IOT system architecture and components (Kafka, async data flow)
  • Knowledge of Docker, managing microservice pools, service discovery
  • Track record and passion for bringing high quality automation, including continuous deployments, automated service failover etc.
  • Strong track record of management and leadership
  • Experience with creating robust release management processes
  • Experience with systems administrations and networking technologies
  • Operating knowledge of Agile methodologies
  • Collaborative leader with strong communication and planning skills
  • Poised under pressure, with attention to detail and high commitment to customer satisfaction
  • Works across disciplines and functions collaboratively to deliver on commitments.
  • Experience managing local and near/off shore resources.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years as a system architect or similar responsibility as part of separate role
  • Industry expertise in medical and med-tech field, including HIPAA compliance with databases


Functional Description

Manages the planning and delivery of data warehouse and storage architecture. Duties may include management of design services, providing sizing and configuration assistance, and performing needs assessments. Analyzes current business practices, processes and procedures as well as identifying future business opportunities for leveraging data storage and retrieval system capabilities. Manages relationships with software and hardware vendors to understand the potential architectural impact of different vendor strategies, ensures the development of proper training and documentation for enterprise-wide technical architecture, systems use and maintenance, and planning and integrating next-generation technologies into the architectural strategy. Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.

  • Participates in corporate development of methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for projects, programs, and people.

  • Manages the activities of a functional area and/or external service providers.
  • People management responsibilities include hiring / terminations, performance reviews, career development coaching and compensation decisions.


Experience and Education

  • Typically requires a Bachelors degree with 15+ years of industry experience.
  • 9+ years of successful management experience in relevant industry.


Workplace Type

  • The Workplace Type for this role is Assigned Desk. Based on the nature of your role you will have an assigned desk or office located at a Dexcom site and should plan to be onsite approximately 4-5 days per week.
