Salary Range:$135,000.00 To 190,000.00 Annually

The Director - Data & Analytics will be instrumental in the development and execution of the overall data strategy at Boston Mutual Life, in alignment with organizational and IT objectives and vision. This includes the development of data integration, data structure, data warehousing strategies and capabilities for both on premise and cloud-based repositories of data and associated toolsets. The resulting data-infrastructure and toolsets will elevate organizational reporting, management and business strategy capabilities and produce new insights associated portfolio analytics to enhance operational efficiencies, predictive modeling capabilities and overall business decision making.

The Director - Data & Analytics is responsible for the development of a collaborative Data Governance framework while partnering with IT in the overall security of the Boston Mutual Life Data Assets. The development of this framework, the establishment and execution of data-integration strategies, while elevating the quality and reliability of data leveraged for enhanced Business Intelligence capabilities are critical components of this role. Ultimately, success will be recognized through the realization of a culture of data insights-driven decision making processes within the organization, assisting Boston mutual Life in achieving sustainable, profitable growth.

The Data & Analytics team is part of the overall Information Technology team (IT).

The Director - Data & Analytics is expected to:

  • Provide leadership for all aspects of the enterprise database functions, including architecture, integration strategies, implementation and administration of on premise and cloud platforms and operations.
  • Lead Data Management activities, including the development of database and data architecture which support the multi-faceted needs of a data driven environment: Data lakes/vaults, RDMS, NoSQL databases, data service platforms for reporting (Tableau, Power BI, SSRS, and similar) and OLAP layers (SSAS) that include:
    • Developing inherently secure, reliable, scalable, and modular access to Data.
    • Operational aspects of database technologies to ensure responsive, available, reliable and secure data environment.
    • Creating a unified architecture for batch, real time and streaming data ingestion, transformation, cleansing, enrichment, transaction processing, reporting and analytics.
  • Lead Data Governance activities, including; Master Data Management (MDM), Information Assurance and Data Security
  • Lead and direct efforts to establish, evolve and deliver on Business Intelligence, Data Analytics and data modeling capabilities to advance the growth of the business
  • Balance current state value delivery while developing a foundation for future enterprise-wide analytics to minimize technical debt, including delivery of high-quality releases while collaborating with and delivering value to stakeholders needs.
  • Provide team/people leadership that:
  • Creates and executes on a shared vision in alignment with the department and organizational goals, objectives and corporate vision
  • Establishes a positive, participative and collaborative team environment that inspires creative, high-performing, continuous learning and engaged team members
  • Is responsible for attracting, selecting, and on-boarding a diverse and qualified team and determining the appropriate team resource requirements to meet the organization's objectives and strategic direction
  • Develop team members through coaching, training and development opportunities, and on-going performance feedback including timely follow-up on performance challenges and issues
  • Complete and/or recommend appropriate salary administration for team members in accordance with organizational procedures and practices
  • Review and approve operational expenditures within delegated authorities

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree required

Experience:

  • 10+ years professional business experience, ideally in data management, IT leadership
  • 8+ years of progressive leadership growth directly leading functional or cross-functional teams
  • 8+ years' experience in developing and managing enterprise class relational database systems, schema design, information architecture, internal objects, database optimization and turning.
  • 5+ years' experience developing and leveraging reporting platforms like Tableau, Power BI, SSRS and OLAP layers (SSAS)
  • Previous work-experience in using database services, such as, RDS, MS SQL, and managing cloud database services in AWS or Azure platforms
  • Strong experience in Agile methodology, processes, and best practices, including Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment (CI/CD).
  • Cross-functional leadership experience in a service-oriented technology environment or information-intensive industry

Knowledge Requirements & Capabilities:

  • Experience in the insurance, financial services or FinTech space preferred.
  • Ability to forward think and evolve a team with complex and varied roles ranging from Data Architects and Administrators to data engineers/ETL developers and Data Scientists and MLOps Engineers
  • Strong interpersonal skills: active listener, ability to build relationships, develop trust, and influence change for employees at all levels including leadership
  • Experience leading and supporting a hybrid workforce (on-site, remote)
  • Experience developing presentations and other communication materials for use with senior level executives or all staff
  • Strong prioritization and decision-making skills
  • Excellent leadership and mentoring abilities
  • Understanding of the evolving digital landscape, including emerging technologies in the database, BI and Data Analytics fields
  • Excellent strategic conceptual thinking and consulting skills
  • Ability to effectively drive people, process, and technology change in a dynamic and complex environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain data insights to business leaders and business concepts to technical teams
  • Be an effective communicator, with strong oral and visual presentation skills that convey clear appropriate messaging to the target audience.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of Boston Mutual's associates are currently working remotely in accordance with our safety protocols. The selected candidate will be expected to temporarily work remotely for an unspecified period of time as determined in Boston Mutual's sole discretion. When normal business operations resume, the selected candidate will be expected to physically return to work in the office located in Canton, MA. We are transitioning to a hybrid model over the next few months -- with two days in the office (Mondays and Thursdays). Based on business need you may be required to come into the office on more days.
