The Data Scientist and BI Sr. Developer is responsible for the design, development, testing, implementation, deployment, and support of prescriptive and predictive analytics. This individual must have an understanding of Data Science best practices/methodologies, relational structures, dimensional data modeling, Structured Query Language (SQL), Python, and data warehouse and reporting techniques. In this role, you will be expected to monitor, coach, and mentor junior team members on ways to maintain and improve processes and development practices. This role does not have supervisory responsibilities or direct reports.
Required If you are located in Eastern Time Zone, you will have the flexibility to telecommute* as you take on some tough challenges.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Extensive understanding of functional business areas supported
  • Coaches and mentors both technical and business staff on information solutions
  • Ability to communicate directly with both technical and non-technical business users in order to better understand business needs and recommend related requirements for reports, dashboards, and models
  • Produce deliverables by gathering information and understanding the business user needs and objectives
  • Translate business requirements into technical specifications that will be used to develop analytics, models, and methods for both internal and external use (full lifecycle)
  • Write and maintain technical documentation to describe data analytics development, logic, coding, testing, model changes, and corrections
  • Develop training and documentation for end-users as applicable
  • Maintain a high-level of data quality awareness which includes working proactively on identifying and improving data quality
  • Take ownership and participate in Data Analytics projects as needed or assigned
  • Continue education to enhance skills in Python, Data Analytics and Science, and new tools to improve outcomes
  • Build and optimize classifiers using machine learning techniques
  • Data mining
  • Process, cleanse, and verify the integrity of data used for analysis
  • Perform ad-hoc analysis and present results in a clear manner
  • Create and maintain automated anomaly detection systems
  • Lead and assist with internal, ad-hoc and external required contractual recurring reporting and other critical BI initiatives as required
  • Train team members and business users on self-service BI capabilities

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in Python
  • 3+ years hand-on experience with BI tools, such as Cognos, Tableau, or Qlik
  • 3+ years of experience in SQL coding, preferably PostgreSQL
  • Advanced SQL skills, including stored procedures, functions, indexes, and views. Hands-on experience
  • Fundamental to intermediate ability to create data visualizations using Python
  • Utilize Python to integrate, analyze, and visualize large data sets
  • Leverage Python to export results into Excel including adding Excel functions
  • Lead data science projects or teams or working independently on data science projects
  • Fundamental to Intermediate proficiency in Python for classical statistical analysis and data modeling, machine learning (e.g., decision trees), and ETL processes
  • Fundamental to Intermediate knowledge of inferential statistics (for example, linear modeling, hypothesis testing, nonparametric statistics) and machine learning techniques (for example, decision trees)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Home location is in Eastern Time Zone or willingness to work business hours in Eastern Time Zone
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or related degree or equivalent combination of education, technical training or work/military experience
  • Masters degree in Computer Science or equivalent, or the equivalent combination of education, technical training, or work/military experience
  • Experience with BI tools, such as Cognos, Tableau, Qlik, or Power BI
  • Experience working in Scrum and Agile environments

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $82,100 to $146,900. The salary range for Connecticut / Nevada residents is $90,500 to $161,600. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
