About the Role:
The Core Services team provides analytical insights and solutions for critical cross-company functions and processes that each affects how we show up in the world for our customers, including Safety + Insurance, Customer Obsession, and Payments, Risk, and Identity. As a Data Science Manager in the Core Services organization, you get to use your quantitative skills and insight towards customers and collaborative spirit to work closely with Product, Ops, Engineering, and Data Scientists to provide data driven insights to find new opportunities to take our product and business to the next level. You will also have an opportunity to build and manage a team of Data Scientists. This will be a highly cross-functionally role that will work closely with engineering, product management, and partner data teams.
Here are some of the teams that make it happen:

  • Safety and Insurance: The Safety and Insurance team provides insights and analytical solutions that are timely, accurate, and useful to drive safety and deliver insurance. We partner closely with a highly cross-functional team including product management, engineering, operations, and policy teams to make the Uber platform as safe as possible through new products and policies
  • Customer Obsession: Building rich chat experiences in a variety of products for riders, drivers and eaters to help users tackle their support needs with as little friction as possible

What You'll Do

  • Manage a team of 3-5 highly skilled data scientists to deliver projects, with high quality and on time
  • Develop data-driven business insights and work with the team and cross-functional partners to find opportunities, drive product strategy, planning, and execution
  • Drive understanding of our users and their interaction with our products, through in-depth analyses of user interaction and engagement
  • Define how our teams measure success, by developing Key Performance Indicators and other user/business metrics, in close partnership with Product Management and other teams such as engineering, operations and marketing
  • Run experiments and develop dashboards and data visualizations to enable observability and to communicate results to leadership. Provide technical mentorship to the team.
  • Answer sophisticated business questions and define new and existing product metrics via SQL queries to enable business and product owners to make critical decisions

Basic Qualifications

  • M.S. or Bachelors degree in Math, Economics, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, or other quantitative fields.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working with sophisticated data analysis and metrics reporting
  • Minimum 2 years building and leading data science teams
  • Expertise in Python
  • Proficiency with SQL and Hive / Spark
  • Strong statistical background
  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on experimentation (A/B testing, synthetic controls) experience
  • Experience building intuitive and impactful dashboards and data visualizations that drive business decisions (eg with Tableau, Mixpanel, Looker, or similar)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of machine learning techniques
  • Experience with causal ML methods
  • Communication with stakeholders - ability to influence and build alignment by clearly communicating and presenting information
  • Ability to understand and prioritize business goals and strategies
  • Project management skills - Ability to drive projects end-to-end
  • Willingness to learn new methodologies and adapt to business needs and goals
  • Ability to deliver on timelines and move quickly with multiple teams while maintaining attention to detail
  • Advanced experience with experimental design and statistical methods
  • Have a growth mindset; love solving ambiguous, bold and impactful problems!
