Purpose of Job
We are seeking a talented Data Engineer II for either our Phoenix, AZ, San Antonio, TX, or Plano, TX facility.

The candidate selected for this position will work with as a Data Engineer in the USAA's P&C Data and Analytics space. They will work the team to consume data from our new policy system built on top of Guidewire Policy Center. They will get the chance to work with ETL/ELT tools like DBT and Informatica PowerCenter while building our modern data warehouse on Snowflake in AWS in support of our P&C business community, as well as many other downstream consumers of the P&C Data.

Within defined guidelines and framework, Data Engineers (DEs) are engaged in all phases of the data management lifecycle. This includes gathering and analyzing requirements, collecting, processing, storing, securing, and archiving data. Develop and maintain technical systems for data reporting and technical solutions utilizing emerging technologies. Partner with the business to ensure data management solutions aligned to business objectives.

Tasks:

  • Identifies and manages existing and emerging risks that stem from business activities and the job role.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.
  • Follows written risk and compliance policies, standards, and procedures for business activities.
  • Participates in the full life cycle of data engineering to include analysis, solution design, data pipeline engineering, testing, deployment, scheduling, and production support with guidance from senior team members.
  • Assists in the implementation of technical solutions for data reporting and analytic systems.
  • Assists with designing and writing test scripts to verify data integrity and application of functionality. Reviews functionality of existing test scripts for understanding.
  • Demonstrates familiarity with IT Change and Release Management best practices. Deploys data pipeline code with assistance from senior team members.
  • Participate in design and code review sessions.
  • Actively participates in Agile ceremonies such as daily standup, iteration planning, backlog grooming, and retrospective sessions.
  • Develops intermediate familiarity of data management best practices by participating in trainings, reviewing documentation, and reading code from existing solutions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of business products and processes.
  • Assists senior team members in breaking down business features into technical stories and approaches.
  • Actively learns about new and emerging technologies in the data engineering space. Seeks to apply learnings in current and future projects.



Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree; OR Approved certification from CodeUp, Galvenize, VetFIT (Veterans for IT) or eFIT (Employees for IT)
  • 2 years of data engineering, data analysis or software development experience implementing data solutions.
  • Working Experience in SQL and Relational Databases.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.



When you apply for this position, you will be required to answer some initial questions. This will take approximately 5 minutes. Once you begin the questions you will not be able to finish them at a later time and you will not be able to change your responses.

Preferred experience:

  • 2 or more years' experience developing, deploying and supporting high-quality, fault-tolerant data pipelines (leveraging distributed, data movement technologies and approaches, including but not limited to ETL and streaming ingestion and processing)
  • 1 or more years' experience in SQL development and/or NoSQL databases
  • 1 or more years of experience with Snowflake or other database platforms
  • Experience with ETL Tools (Informatica, DataStage, Data Build Tool, etc.)
  • Experience with GIT, GitLab, GitHub
  • 1 or more years' experience utilizing Linux scripting (Python, Shell, etc.)
  • Experience working with Agile Development Methodologies
  • Basic knowledge of Guidewire
  • Familiarity with Control-m or other scheduling tools

Compensation:

USAA has an effective method for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market position. The salary range for this skill is: $72,900-$131,400*.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance or at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.

Geographical Differential: Geographic pay differential is additional pay provided to eligible employees working in locations where market pay levels are above the national average.

Shift premium: will be addressed on an individual-basis for applicable roles that are consistently scheduled for non-core hours.
