Data Center Engineer II
About the Role
The Metal team provides on-premise and cloud data center infrastructure to keep Uber's services running. Metal builds the foundational layer for Uber's products (e.g. rideshare, food delivery, freights, etc.) to operate within our data centers.
The Data Center Engineering team provides on-premise data center physical infrastructure, which includes cooling, power and structured cabling. The Data Center Engineering team is a nimble and efficient team of engineers focused on delivering data centers and maintaining uptime.
Data Center Engineering, Strategic Engineering
- Collaborate with Hardware and Network Engineering to understand future structured cable requirements and deployments
- Collaborate with internal teams to develop standards for structured cable systems and topology
- Drive structured cable innovation within Uber's data centers and across the industry
- Review structured cable designs for feasibility & operational uptime
- Prepare cost analysis and business cases for structured cable build-outs, retrofits and infrastructure improvement
Data Center Engineering, Design & Build-Out
- Prepare conceptual design documents illustrating structured cabling & networking systems and topology requirements
- Prepare structured cabling & networking system design criteria and specifications for data center build-outs
- Assist with preparation of detailed structured cable design documents and specifications for competitive pricing, permitting and build-out
- Travel to data center sites to oversee structured cabling system build-out, testing and network turn-up
- Review structured cable test scripts, procedures, and results
- Assist in managing relationships with data center service providers, contractors, manufacturers and suppliers
Data Center Engineering, Technical Operations
- Collaborate with the on-site data center operation teams to improve workflow efficiency of structured & patch cable system testing & troubleshooting
- Support and collaborate with partner teams to assist with network connectivity outages
- Review and develop Method of Procedures & Change Management Requests and communicate activities with potential impacts to external and internal teams
- Participate in incident review meetings, root cause analysis investigations and discussions
- Respond as-needed during data center outages and incidents
- Review operation configurations in compliance with SLAs
- Review with partner teams and reliability engineering to ensure continued service delivery during structured cable retrofits and maintenance
- Travel to data center sites for system audits, engineering studies, as-built updates and testing
