Business Intelligence Developer (Hybrid)
The Opportunity
The Financial Insights Team is looking for an energetic individual with strong technical and analytical skills to join the team as a Business Intelligence (BI) Developer. You will be responsible for creating new digital solutions (such as dashboards, web applications, automated tools & workflows) to answer MassMutual's business questions by collaborating with business partners throughout the enterprise.
The Team
The Financial Insights Team, within the Financial Planning & Analysis department, was created in late 2019 with the goal of transforming Corporate Finance into a modern finance organization, where digital solutions and quantitative methods are employed to generate near-real time actionable financial insights for MassMutual's business leaders. As the Financial Insights team has grown over the past 3 years, we seek an experienced Business Intelligence (BI) Developer to collaborate with internal customers to expand upon our digital solutions suite by creating new products to extend our reach within the enterprise.
The Impact
The BI developer will lead the development of new digital products as well as coordinate with other BI developers and business analysts to improve upon the current digital products deployed today. Our ideal candidate is an intuitive problem solver with the drive and ability to deliver creative solutions using data. You will be a subject matter expert for the current reporting application and new tools while applying existing knowledge, and teaching others.
Your responsibilities would include, but are not limited to:
Discover, Develop, and Deliver
- Run discovery sessions with internal customers to learn about the business problem to solve and gather requirements
- Translate business needs into technical requirements that can be delivered timely and effectively
- Design, develop, and deploy highly interactive dashboards, reports, and other visualizations that are easy to understand, enable self-service, and provide secure and efficient access to data
- Conduct unit testing and troubleshooting
- Assist with end-user training and lead the development of BI governance materials
- Perform project-based data analyses and provide technical support as necessary
Continuously Improve and Be Agile
- Work collaboratively with institutional business subject matter experts and partner with Data Management and Enterprise Technology teams to implement data enhancements and resolve data quality issues
- Continuously enhance and troubleshoot the performance, capabilities, and functional coverage of BI solutions (e.g., MicroStrategy, Tableau, etc.)
- Stay up-to-date on latest trends and capabilities within BI industry and MassMutual
Teaming
- Be a thought partner to other Financial Insights team members for the design, management, and documentation of solutions for new reports and dashboards to support business needs
- Contribute to the team's inclusive environment that emphasizes continuous improvement, open communication, and solution delivery
- Contribute to a team of technically minded individuals working to establish business analytics best practices that drive improved decision making, efficiency and performance across the organization
The Minimum Qualifications
- B.S. degree in a quantitative field (e.g. Computer Science, Engineering, Math, Economics)
- 3+ years of experience with data visualization tools including Tableau and MicroStrategy
- 5+ years of overall experience with focus on delivery of analytics, data engineering, business intelligence, or a related field
- Demonstrated skills in using advanced SQL, stored procedures, and columnar databases (Vertica preferred)
- Experience with eliciting detailed requirements that clearly define what the customer is looking for and how it aligns with the data available today
- Penchant for documenting technical workflows and specifications
- Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, especially with individuals of varying technical knowledge
- Ability to seek guidance and learn new skills from peers
- Possess attributes of being smart, curious, committed to vision, passionate, fun/pleasant, an achiever and having a sense of urgency
The Ideal Qualifications
- Experience with project management tools and methodologies such as Jira, Confluence, and Scrum
- Experience with markup languages such as HTML and CSS
- Experience with web development (both back-end and middleware)
- Passion for dashboard building with a focus on data storytelling and user experience
- Interest in growing your technical and analytical skills while also sharing your current knowledge with other members of the team
- Ability to deliver complex projects using effective planning, pragmatic approaches, and collaboration despite obstacles and ambiguity
