We're currently on the lookout for aDirector of Steering Systemsto join the Chassis engineering team due to onward progression and the current leader being promoted to Functional Leader of Chassis. In this role, you will lead and grow the Steering team responsible for the analysis, design, validation, and release of Nikola's BEV and FCEV Class 8 trucks in the following areas:

We're currently on the lookout for aDirector of Steering Systemsto join the Chassis engineering team due to onward progression and the current leader being promoted to Functional Leader of Chassis. In this role, you will lead and grow the Steering team responsible for the analysis, design, validation, and release of Nikola's BEV and FCEV Class 8 trucks in the following areas:
- Recirculating ball steering gears
- Hydraulic pumps and associated components
- Rack & Pinon steering systems
- Electronic torque overlay systems
- Sensor and vehicle integration components
- Electric Power Steering systems
- Energy-on-demand systems to support power steering
- Steering columns, I-shafts, dash seals, and pitman arms
- Lead & collaborate with cross-functional teams, suppliers, manufacturing, testing, and validation teams on the complete life cycle of the project through product launch, and implementation of lessons learned on subsequent products (cradle-to-cradle responsibility)
- Apply fundamental physics to lead the progression of design maturity from initial concept to product launch, to next concept
- Lead and guide definition of appropriate system-level engineering targets to meet function, quality and attribute requirements of the Vehicle Program
- Lead and guide development and validation of Vehicle/System Design Specifications incorporating company/industry/regulatory standards, test procedures and material specifications
- Review and champion the development of the Design Validation Plan and Report (DVP&R) including both in-house and supplier testing plans, and ensure sign-off tests are completed on schedule
- Support the Purchasing team in sourcing and RFQ activities
- Support vehicle launch and pre-production builds (both virtual and physical)
- Develop and maintain the steering system product plan and align to vehicle level requirements.
- Grow the steering system team with the required world-class resources to execute the steering system product plan
- A Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, MET, Automotive Engineering or in a related field, Master's Degree preferred.
- 15+ years of automotive industry mechanical, design or product development experience
- 5+ years of engineering team leadership experience
- Strong grasp of solid mechanics fundamentals and mechatronics design
- Proven experience in the development of steering systems, and launch of steering components into production
- Working knowledge of GD&T, FMEA, DVP&R, DFSS, DFA, DFM, APQP, VAVE and problem resolution (8D, Ishikawa diagrams, etc.)
- Engineering knowledge of defined requirements and validation of component(s) / system(s) design, function, performance, production & manufacturing requirements, testing, and validation
- Experience interpreting Multibody dynamics simulation, CAE simulation, Durability and validation reports
- Familiarity with Multibody dynamics simulation, automotive fastening systems, and steering system hydraulics is a plus.
