Capital One is seeking a Technical Writer to be a part of a team tasked with documenting the business-critical APIs and other developer tools available on our world-class internal and external portals. The work of this team is fundamental to empowering developers to build great products that reach tens of millions of consumers.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.

Capital One is seeking a Technical Writer to be a part of a team tasked with documenting the business-critical APIs and other developer tools available on our world-class internal and external portals. The right candidate will have a love of technology, a genuine ability to use language as a tool, and a deeply technical experience as a tech writer. They are also:
- Experienced at writing API documentation such as reference docs and developer guides for API users and able to create API reference documentation, best-practice workflows, and examples
- Dedicated to delivering content that is technically accurate and provides clarity for even the most complex processes
- Comfortable juggling multiple projects to drive successful and timely completion
- Organized and able to navigate competing priorities, leading projects from start to finish
- Able to self-edit and committed to document quality and a flawless user experience
- Open to new and modern ways of constructing and delivering content
- Ready to contribute process improvements for added efficiency
- Strong grammarians who understand how sentence structure and word choice can clarify or obscure meaning
- Happy to iterate and collaborate: draft, ask, test, fail, and improve
- Curious about Capital One, our APIs, and the people who consume them
This person will document APIs, improve our API design, perform light testing, maintain site excellence and consistency, and master our API offerings. We won't expect them to know our conventions or our environment, but they should know the difference between a POST and a PUT.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or military experience
- At least 3 years experience writing REST API documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences. Writing samples will be requested
- At least 3 years experience with REST and RESTful conventions
- Knowledge of JSON and YAML
- Can read and understand source code
- Proven ability to handle multiple projects and able to prioritize tasks
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience crafting and maintaining example code in languages like cURL, Python, Go, or NodeJS
- Experience writing and publishing in MadCap Flare or similar tooling a plus, but applicants interested in learning are encouraged to apply
- Have experience working with OpenAPI/SwaggerUI
- Ability to use HTTP clients like Postman to research and test API queries
- 5+ years of technical writing experience
- Comfortable working in an Agile environment
- Able to learn quickly and work well independently
