About the job
The Red Hat Marketing team is looking for an open source centric community leader to join us as a Senior Technical Community Manager for the Opensource.com team. In this role, you will be the public face of the site and its community programs. This unique role focuses on building a comprehensive community nurture program that results in compelling technical content for our audience of developers, sysadmins, and open source enthusiasts of all kinds. Given the publication's focus and commitment to these audiences, doing so will require a significant understanding of the open source technology landscape, including topics like Linux, Kubernetes, hybrid cloud, and hobbies these readers enjoy, like Raspberry Pi or internet of things (IoT).
The site is one of many at Red Hat dedicated to publishing audience-specific content collaboratively produced with its readers. While each of our sites has its unique lens and community, community managers learn from each other as a team of experts to develop engaging and genuine peer-to-peer connections.
You will be a part of Red Hat's open culture that makes us unique in the industry, enriched with Open Management Practices, Open Decision Framework, and diversity and inclusion, to name a few. Regardless of your role, you will have an opportunity to collaborate and influence as you define and manage your career at Red Hat. Successful applicants must reside in a state where Red Hat is registered to do business.
What you will do

  • Focus on maintaining and acting as the direct point of contact of the long-term community content strategy and its associated nurture framework for Opensource.com, including the targeted audience and the channels used to pursue connection
  • Regularly recruit new authors while ensuring repeat contribution, source and review technical content each week, and expand readership through public presentations and participation in channels where the community is active
  • Maintain expert knowledge of the publication's specific audience
  • Work directly with authors to curate and review compelling content for the publication
  • Ensure authors will enjoy their experience with the editorial process
  • Coach authors to continually improve story selection and story quality for the reader persona
  • Nurture authors to be the best community members they can be
  • Represent the community by following its guidelines and Code of Conduct

What you will bring

  • Experience building, nurturing, and growing communities of shared interests, preferably in an open source ecosystem
  • Domain-specific expertise in some portion of our community of developers, sysadmins, and open source enthusiasts, e.g., familiarity with contributing to projects on GitLab or active in the Open Source Initiative
  • Publicly visible credibility in at least one of the subcommunities of interest to Opensource.com like Python, Kubernetes, Linux, or Raspberry Pi
  • Excellent spoken and written English and the ability to collaborate with the UTC-4 time zone throughout the week

The following will be considered a plus:

  • Excellent community management skills and willingness to be accountable for the continued engagement of the community of authors and users of Opensource.com
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to host meetings, manage a Discourse forum, collaborate through Trello, and email with members of our community programs and their stakeholders
  • Excellent technical familiarity; 5+ years of experience interacting with open source developers, sysadmins, and contributors
  • Experience with publications from article input to publication; previous experience as a part of a daily content publication system for a company or community blog
  • Understanding of technical writing; experience publishing technical content like blog posts, video streams, or documentation for open source projects
  • Data focused; experience working backward from analyzing and interpreting data to guide content strategy
  • Ability to make progress on complex projects on your own; excellent time management and organizational skills to achieving goals and ability to clearly communicate progress throughout
  • Collaborative work style, excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships across multiple departments and all levels of management, as well as outside the company
  • Practical experience in the field
