What you will do:
Northwestern Mutual seeks a Senior Editor knowledgeable about advanced financial planning topics and experienced in making these complicated concepts easy to understand and applicable to HNW consumers' lives. This role will collaborate across the organization to help develop and then execute a HNW consumer-facing thought leadership program. The content will support FA marketing -- including presentations, video, white papers, social media, Advisor websites -- and brand or enterprise thought leadership. This Senior Editor joins a passionate team focused on amplifying Northwestern Mutual's expertise to improve the lives of our audience and help reach NM's business goals.
How you will do it:

  • Conceive, edit/write advanced consumer facing financial content to deliver financial planning thought leadership to high-net-worth and occasionally broader consumer audiences. Clearly and simply explain advanced planning concepts around estate planning, tax strategies, financial planning, insurance planning and other topics. Build stories and narratives based on data and research.
  • Cultivate relationships with top-level experts and leaders to identify stories and produce content that aligns to NM's planning and investing philosophy. Content may either feature subject matter expert quotes or be published in their voicer and byline.
  • Create content that is relevant to the audience. Connect to what is happening in the world: culturally, market events, economic events, legislation and consumer/societal trends. We pride ourselves on educating consumers on personal finance topics in a familiar yet authoritative tone - that helps put the world around them in context.
  • Apply an understanding of how content is critical to drive business and brand goals. Help spark conversations that positioning the Financial Advisor as a trusted, accessible specialist. Develop content with a clear understanding of how it will be promoted and the critical metrics that will determine success.
  • Cultivate new freelance writing talent, coordinate assignments, and manage timelines among freelancers.
  • Manage the internal review process including routing content through subject matter expert review, compliance and other business partners as needed.
  • Work independently with internal marketing business partners to develop or repurpose content for various distribution channels.
  • Develop multiple formats -- articles, white papers, seminars/presentations, social posts, infographics, worksheets, etc. May also include working with SMEs on video formats/scripts.
  • Develop multiple distribution channels - focused on Financial Advisor and their 1:1 relationship with clients/prospects, organic search, social media, and email/e-newsletters. Work with SEO team and utilize SEO tools, as needed, to craft content that will help achieve organic search goals.
  • Other tasks as required by the editorial department, such as tracking invoicing/freelancer costs, managing edit calendars, publishing articles in our CMS, etc. We are a tight-knit team, and we're seeking someone who is a great team partner, who can work independently assigning and editing but can also pinch-hit on whatever task is needed. A flexible/get the job done mentality is crucial.


Bring Your Best! What this role needs:

  • An established knowledge of advanced financial planning topics and themes is preferred. However, any experience working with subject matter experts to create content that explains complicated concepts would is applicable.
  • Proven writing and editing skills for a news or media outlet, or in content marketing for a brand. Familiarity with AP style preferred.
  • Organized, detail oriented and self-motivated.
  • Hungry for a good story. Understands the basic rules of journalism and how to report a story. Passionate about the integrity and the importance of the perspective, advice and guidance NM provides. Comfortable pushing boundaries in order to infuse content with provocative perspectives or expertise - within the constraints of a highly regulated industry.
  • Comfortable working with top-level executives.
  • Comfortable working in a CMS, Drupal, Wordpress, Hubspot or similar
  • Knowledge of basic SEO and analytics-tracking (e.g., Google Analytics).
  • Experience copy-editing and fact-checking; an excellent grammarian.
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks to meet or exceed timelines and customer expectations.
  • Minimum of Five years of experience. Ideally, this experience is in financial services.
  • Located in Milwaukee, or New York City.
