Job Summary

The Lead Writer on the NRG Business team provides high-level writing solutions across a wide range of topics core to the mission of NRG and the customers we serve - from high-level awareness through post-purchase follow-up. The Lead Writer manages the writing team, sets the tone for our brand voice and ensures it is expressed consistently and humanly in all deliverables. Whether driving action from a customer to learn more about a multi-faceted energy approach, or reflecting our core values in a meaningful way to community leaders or NRG shareholders, the successful candidate would excel in message clarity and effectiveness. The Lead Writer also works with marketing team leaders on developing overall content strategies and campaign roll-out plans, identifying appropriate mediums for message delivery, ranging from digital, social, video and point-of-sale.

Assuring that all messages are expressed with the right blend of creativity, clarity and discipline is an essential component in building our brand and the loyalty of our constituents.

Specific Roles and Responsibilities

  • Serve as a go-to resource within our marketing team, focused on initial strategic development and extending through tactical communications in tandem with other in-house creative team members
  • Facilitate the rollout of a refreshed brand through powerful and consistent messaging and voice
  • Ensure and express consistency in voice, messaging and style at all customer touchpoints
  • Partner and collaborate with our design, digital and account team members
  • Actively lead brainstorming sessions and creative development efforts to drive strong conceptual solutions and consult with subject matter experts to obtain, develop and clarify technical information related to products and services
  • Advance cross-functional relationships within the NRG hierarchy, building relationships with in-house experts and bringing that knowledge seamlessly into our brand
  • Embrace the functionality of our internal project management system, using it to manage the delivery of content from start to finish
  • Execute copy across a wide range of deliverables - sell sheets, social posts, blogs, videos, print and digital campaigns - and a range of internal customers, starting with NRG Business and including NRG Corporate, Sustainability, positiveNRG, and HR.
  • Incorporate SEO best practices into digital and web-based copy, working in close collaboration with digital and UX team members
  • Excel in presenting complex information and solutions in a simple, easy and memorable manner to customers who are often being introduced to these subjects for the first time


Working Conditions

  • Hybrid workplace segmentation: 1-2 days per week in-office, 3-4 days per week remote
  • Open to 100% remote work segmentation if not locally based to an NRG office location
  • Majority of work performed by utilizing a computer in a seated position
  • Willingness to travel occasionally - likely less than 10%
  • Some overtime required as special projects arise



Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in journalism, communications, marketing or related fields
  • Minimum of seven years experience producing and overseeing content creation.



Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience writing for various audiences, including B2B and B2C
  • Industry experience a big plus
  • Technical writing experience preferred, but not necessary
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, PowerPoint and Excel

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing content teams and processes
  • Ability to collaborate across all functions
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects, work independently and in collaboration with team members
  • Comfortable managing deadlines and deliverables in a fast-paced environment
