Lead News Writer
About the role….
Are you an experienced journalist who’s passionate about personal finance and insurance? Do you get excited about interviewing experts for a story on investing trends, or streaming the latest Fed meeting to see what Jerome Powell is thinking about the future of the US economy? Policygenius is looking for a writer/reporter who can translate their passion for finance into actionable, news-driven stories and help lead our news team.
The Lead News Writer will be a leading contributor to the Policygenius news verticals and our weekly newsletter, while mentoring other writers on the team. This role will report to the Senior Managing Editor and also work closely with our Editorial Director.
In this role, you will…
- Pitch, research, write, and edit the best and most actionable personal finance and insurance news on the internet
- Stay up-to-date on the latest news, trends, brands, and events in the financial and insurance industries
- Cover topics including investing, retirement, mortgages, life insurance, home insurance, auto insurance, loans, taxes, and the growing crypto space
- Interview experts, academics, authors, and industry leaders every week as part of your reporting
- Work on a mix of short-term, medium-term, and long-term stories
- Collaborate with our editors and directors on editorial strategy
- Track performance and iterate based on learnings
- Mentor other writers
We’d love to hear from you if…
- You have 4+ years experience writing and/or editing personal finance and insurance content. CFP, CPA, CFA, or other financial certifications and licenses are a huge plus.
- You’re both analytical and editorial — you nerd out on your research but make your writing simple and clear
- You’re comfortable writing 4 stories per week, as well as identifying and interviewing sources on a 24-to-48-hour deadline
- You know where to find news leads, how to get an econ professor on the phone to explain what’s up with the S&P, how to read an earnings report, and how to grab a quick quote from a CFP
- You’re passionate about editorial strategy, content performance, and proactively seeking wins
