About the role….

Are you an experienced journalist who’s passionate about personal finance and insurance? Do you get excited about interviewing experts for a story on investing trends, or streaming the latest Fed meeting to see what Jerome Powell is thinking about the future of the US economy? Policygenius is looking for a writer/reporter who can translate their passion for finance into actionable, news-driven stories and help lead our news team.

The Lead News Writer will be a leading contributor to the Policygenius news verticals and our weekly newsletter, while mentoring other writers on the team. This role will report to the Senior Managing Editor and also work closely with our Editorial Director.

In this role, you will…

  • Pitch, research, write, and edit the best and most actionable personal finance and insurance news on the internet
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest news, trends, brands, and events in the financial and insurance industries
  • Cover topics including investing, retirement, mortgages, life insurance, home insurance, auto insurance, loans, taxes, and the growing crypto space
  • Interview experts, academics, authors, and industry leaders every week as part of your reporting
  • Work on a mix of short-term, medium-term, and long-term stories
  • Collaborate with our editors and directors on editorial strategy
  • Track performance and iterate based on learnings
  • Mentor other writers

We’d love to hear from you if…

  • You have 4+ years experience writing and/or editing personal finance and insurance content. CFP, CPA, CFA, or other financial certifications and licenses are a huge plus.
  • You’re both analytical and editorial — you nerd out on your research but make your writing simple and clear
  • You’re comfortable writing 4 stories per week, as well as identifying and interviewing sources on a 24-to-48-hour deadline
  • You know where to find news leads, how to get an econ professor on the phone to explain what’s up with the S&P, how to read an earnings report, and how to grab a quick quote from a CFP
  • You’re passionate about editorial strategy, content performance, and proactively seeking wins

You can expect…

  • Company-paid health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance
  • 401(k) plan, FSA, and commuter benefits
  • Generous PTO
  • A flexible-first workplace with the freedom to work in our beautiful offices or remotely as needed based on the needs of your role, your team, and the business
  • The opportunity to grow alongside a company shaking up a big, old-fashioned industry, including training, mentorship, and coaching from leadership
  • An inclusive community of fun, diverse, and open-minded coworkers committed to our mission of helping people get financial protection right

What are Policygenius Perks + Benefits

Policygenius Benefits Overview

People are at the core of everything Policygenius does. Policygenius invests in strong benefits — insurance, generous PTO, 401(k) matching, a pet “pawlicy” — and prioritizes creating a great employee experience. Even during a pandemic and adjusting to remote work, they maintained their people-first, values-first philosophy by expanding mental health offerings and supply budgets to ensure employees could bring their best selves to work, even at home. Parents were offered flexible work hours and Policygenius launched digital wellness-focused programming. They prioritized social responsibility and diversity, equity and inclusion, including matching charitable donations and investing in employee affinity groups.

An Insider's view of Policygenius

What’s the vibe like in the office?

Think: startup meets productive adult office. The fridge is stocked with La Croix and there's usually a dog or two running around, but there's no ping pong. Everyone works hard and takes the job seriously. Strict "no chuckleheads allowed" policy. People are cool and from a really wide range of backgrounds.

Adam

Senior Product Manager

What kinds of technical challenges do you and your team face?

All of the normal challenges of building a modern (fairly cutting edge actually, if I do say so myself), scalable tech stack, just with the added twist of integrating with a bunch of fairly archaic APIs. The insurance industry historically isn't exactly a bastion of modern technology, but we're doing our darnedest to change that.

Trevor

Senior Software Engineer

What makes someone successful on your team?

Teamwork and problem-solving go a long way on my team and at Policygenius overall. I would say that individual ideas are not only supported but more importantly, encouraged. I'm consistently challenged, but always learning; our environment promotes both individual and professional growth. I'm looking forward to moving to the next level!

Masuda

Customer Success Team Lead

What is your vision for the company?

Our vision for Policygenius is to be the go-to consumer platform for insurance and financial protection. What Expedia did for travel, we're doing for financial protection. We're already the top platform for under-50 consumers for life insurance and disability insurance, and we're excited to expand that to new categories in 2019!

Jen

CEO

What's something quirky about your company?

So many team members have really interesting stories about their time before Pg. We’ve got trivia champions, ex-magicians, chicken bag experts, and even someone who used to be Madonna’s assistant. It’s all story-telling gold.

Justin
