FACT CHECK EDITOR

USA TODAY is seeking an editor to join its Fact Check news team. This editor will help lead a team that investigates viral misinformation on social media, seeking to debunk falsehoods and elevate truthful information. Fact-checking requires attention to detail, critical thinking and a commitment to truth and meaningful context. Fairness, accuracy and excellent news judgment are paramount, as are strong editing, research and time-management skills. The editor should also be a team player capable of working collaboratively with editors and reporters throughout our news operation and, on occasion, with journalists across the 250-plus local news sites in the USA TODAY Network.

Washington or political-reporting experience is a plus as is experience with fact-checking and the misinformation beat. This position could involve weekend or evening work and will be attached our Washington, D.C., bureau, but you would be eligible to work in remote location. The position reports to Martina Stewart, the senior editor in charge of the Fact Check team.

Responsibilities:

  • Edit and publish fact checks across a variety of topics
  • Coach reporters with varying levels of experience
  • Lead not only on reporting and accuracy but also fairness and context.
  • Optimize content, paying special attention to headlines, SEO and fields visible to social audiences.
  • Use social media and other tools to spot high-interest items.
  • Uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity, ethics and credibility.
  • Interact with social media users as necessary related to fact-checked content



Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or master's in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5 years of experience in journalism, with editing experience and strong editing skills
  • Solid news judgment
  • Top-notch planning, organizational and time management skills
  • Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct
  • Experience with storytelling techniques on multiple platforms
  • Understanding of metrics, social media and SEO
  • Self-motivation and self-direction


Minimum salary: $72,000
