Education Editor

The education of America's children and young adults in the aftermath of pandemic shutdowns is one of the nation's biggest stories. The upheaval worsened inequities linked to race and class, jeopardizing the future of a generation.

During the pandemic, American communities have become more polarized, over everything from health protocols to inclusion at school to basic instruction about U.S. history.

USA TODAY/usatoday.com is seeking an editor to lead its award-winning team of early childhood, K-12 and higher education reporters.

Our education reporters have investigated the nation's for-profit colleges and their accreditors, uncovering a fake college. They have helmed complex data projects, completing a first-of-its-kind analysis of teacher salaries and cost of living, and chasing down absenteeism records from around the country.

They have collaborated with local reporters to capture scenes from classrooms across America. They have worked with journalists across USA TODAY to chronicle the crisis in childcare and the difficulty of navigating the pandemic with kids too young to be vaccinated.

Our reporters contextualize breaking news, turn smart short-term enterprise pieces, weave together narratives and doggedly report accountability stories. The education editor should be skilled in editing these, and candidates should have a track record of coaching reporters to produce a stream of short-, medium- and long-term stories from their beat.

The education editor will also lead collaborations by the USA TODAY Network team of reporters. This group of about 70 journalists works together on breaking stories, short-term enterprise and long-term projects.

Close relationships with dozens of top-notch reporters in communities across America is one of the USA TODAY's superpowers. Our education team also works closely with enterprise reporters across the USA TODAY newsroom.

We are open to editors working remote anywhere in the country.

Minimum salary for this position: $95,000

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in journalism or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in professional journalism experience.
  • Experience editing stories about education or related topics, with a track record of keeping diversity and equity at the core of your work.
  • Comfortable with social, SEO and audience planning and understands how to hone policy stories to reach a mainstream audience.
  • Leadership or editing experience, either formally or (at least) informally guiding and motivating teams that generate, produce or publish content.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check.
