Job Description

We now have an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and motivated Commissioning Editor to join our global Editorial team to commission high-quality books under China Publishing Program, across a range of Taylor & Francis subject areas including Science, Technology and Medicine, Social Sciences and Humanities.

The Commissioning Editor will pro-actively grow and manage a list of academic research and professional books, building relationships with academic editors and learned society contacts as well as realising opportunities for growth through organic development and acquisitions. The editor will develop a strong commercial strategy for the program in line with Taylor & Francis’ overall objectives, will grow the book offerings in these key subject areas, and will be aware of competitor strengths and weaknesses to take advantage of opportunities in the market.

The successful applicant should possess strong commercial awareness, exhibit an aptitude for highly organised teamwork, a collegiate attitude towards the sharing of projects and ideas. The ability to work towards demanding targets is essential.

What you'll be doing:

Your job responsibilities may include the following but not limited to:

  • Regularly conduct structured research and analysis of relevant academic fields, using a range of tools, to identify areas of growth and potential opportunities to drive frontlist growth across the portfolio
  • Identify key target researchers and research groups to develop and implement structured commissioning plans that respond to current market and research needs
  • In consultation with Publisher, commission high-quality, relevant content for a range of subject areas and deliver content within specified timeframes, and meet demanding annual commissioning and revenue goals
  • Work closely with editorial assistants to ensure that manuscript submission, production, and publishing deadlines are met
  • Close liaison with editorial, production, marketing, and sales colleagues

Qualifications

What we're looking for: 

  • Experience working in academic publishing in an entry-level editorial role preferred; commissioning experience would be an advantage.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Mandarin
  • Able to work cooperatively with local and global colleagues at all levels
  • Ability to work with demanding stakeholders in a diplomatic and assertive manner
  • Strong organisational skills, efficiency and attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize effectively and to work to (often competing) deadlines
  • A positive and proactive approach to problem solving both in daily tasks and more complex trouble-shooting
  • Good publishing business awareness and the ability to learn quickly
  • A high level of computer literacy including MS Office, Strong word processing, spreadsheet, and database skills;
  • Undergraduate degree in STEM or Social Sciences, Master is preferred.

Additional Information:

  • We currently have capacity for this role to be based in either of the following locations: Beijing or Shanghai. However you must have the right to work and live in the region you reside in. 
  • This role is open to candidates in all areas across Beijing and Shanghai. Taylor & Francis has multiple options for how employees can work based on their role – be that in the Office, at home or somewhere in between.
  • Travel, around China to visit universities and colleges and attend conferences (once COVID-19 restrictions allow) may be required.
