We're Looking for an Associate Editor, News (Chicago or Remote)

We’re expanding our news and local reporting team to serve a sophisticated, national audience with short-form, quick-turn tech news from major industry hubs across the U.S. Reporting to the news editor, this editor will primarily be responsible for editing and publishing the news team’s output of approximately two short to medium-length news stories per day per reporter, in addition to managing and overseeing several news reporters as your direct reports. This person will need to possess strong substantive, line and copy editing skills, with acute interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to lead. A curiosity about tech innovations and what they say about the future is a major plus.

You’d be joining a growing team responsible for telling bold and original stories that help an audience of tech professionals learn and build new things. You’ll collaborate closely with other members of the team to discover and share new approaches, formats and perspectives. Additionally, you'll be joining a company that enthusiastically invests in office culture, even with our current, remote-only workforce.

What You Will Do

• Manage a team of up to five news reporters, and collaborate with the news editor and other editors across the editorial department to consistently publish highly relevant stories for our national audience of tech professionals.
• Provide substantive comments, line edits and copy edits on drafts to elevate the quality of our storytelling and help our news reporters grow professionally.
• Assist with distribution efforts of news content on social media and other channels, as needed.
• Occasionally contribute to news editorial by writing and reporting coverage, and brainstorming new editorial formats and series.

What You Need

• At least three years of experience editing in a journalistic capacity.
• An interest in technology, startups and entrepreneurship.
• An eye for engaging, audience-grabbing headlines, and an ability to break down tech industry jargon into accessible, human speak.
• Strong news judgment.
• Familiarity with AP style.
• Experience leading and motivating others.
