Evolv is seeking a Chief Accounting Officer (CAO) to lead our accounting and reporting functions, establish robust financial controls, and ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and SEC regulations. In this role, you will be pivotal in optimizing our accounting processes, building a strong financial reporting foundation, and guiding the company through the next phase of growth.

Success in the Role: What performance outcomes will you achieve over the first 6-12 months?

In the first 30 days, you will:

  • Gain a deep understanding of Evolv’s business model, including the manufacturing processes, sales, and inventory workflows.
  • Build strong relationships with cross-functional teams, including internal audit, finance, and operations.
  • Assess the current control environment, including the status of SOX 404(b) implementation.
  • Familiarize yourself with the company’s financial reporting framework and accounting complexities.

Within 3 months, you will:

  • Lead the optimization of COGS (Cost of Goods Sold) management, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and accuracy in reporting.
  • Oversee internal controls as the key owner, ensuring compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Take full ownership of the accounting team, including oversight of revenue recognition, accounts receivable, payroll, accounts payable, expense management, cash flow, and tax.
  • Drive enhancements to the monthly close calendar, reducing time while improving accuracy.
  • Support and review quarterly and annual SEC reporting, including disclosures related to inventory and COGS.

By the end of the first year, you will:

  • Achieve mastery of Evolv’s internal controls and financial processes, eliminating material weaknesses.
  • Play a critical role in securing a clean audit opinion from external auditors.
  • Identify and proactively address accounting risks, particularly those related to revenue recognition, inventory, manufacturing, and COGS.
  • Streamline the financial close process and improve reporting accuracy.
  • Build and optimize the accounting team, adding resources as needed to scale with the company’s growth.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, highlighting accounting risks and offering innovative solutions.

The Work: What type of work will you do regularly?

Technical Accounting:

  • Lead the application of U.S. GAAP to Evolv’s accounting processes, with expertise in ASC 606 and ASC 842.
  • Own accounting for inventory and manufacturing processes, implementing best practices in NetSuite and other tools.
  • Research and resolve complex accounting issues, documenting conclusions in comprehensive memos.

Financial Acumen:

  • Ensure compliance with SOX 404(b) by designing, implementing, and monitoring effective internal controls.
  • Drive Evolv’s restatement efforts, ensuring high-quality financial reporting and regulatory compliance.

Reporting:

  • Oversee accurate and timely SEC reporting, including 10-Qs and 10-Ks, with a focus on preventing restatements.
  • Collaborate on disclosures related to revenue recognition, inventory, COGS, and other critical financial areas.

Leadership:

  • Inspire and lead the accounting team, fostering a culture of trust, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Act as a problem-solver and subject matter expert, providing guidance on technical accounting and operational challenges.
