What’s the role?
The Analytics Engineering Team Lead will guide our technical experts in creating scalable data models that power IG Group's data-driven future. The role combines hands-on technical expertise with team leadership, serving as the technical foundation of IG's "Smart Business" data transformation strategy while leading the Looker migration and establishing data modeling excellence across the organization.
What will you do?
Technical Leadership & Data Architecture
- Lead and develop a team of analytics engineers, providing technical mentorship, career guidance, and architectural direction while managing resource allocation across multiple cross-functional squads
- Drive the technical strategy and implementation of our Looker migration, ensuring seamless transition of data models while collaborating with senior stakeholders to align technical solutions with business objectives
- Champion the development of AI-powered analytics infrastructure and automated insights while partnering with Data Engineering and AI/ML teams to optimize our data pipeline architecture
- Establish and enforce data modelling best practices, testing frameworks, and governance standards across the organization, ensuring consistency, quality, and scalability of all data assets
Team Management & Development
- Manage technical talent development across the Analytics Engineering Chapter, ensuring effective team rotation between squads based on business priorities
- Lead knowledge-sharing initiatives to build IG's analytics engineering capabilities and foster a culture of technical excellence and innovation
- Guide cross-functional squads delivering robust, scalable data solutions within focused sprint cycles while developing team members' technical expertise and careers
- Foster collaboration across IG's four data themes: Business Intelligence, Operational Efficiency, Client Acquisition, and Personalisation
Strategic Data Solutions & Governance
- Design and build scalable data models that enable self-service analytics across IG's global FinTech operations
- Ensure data solutions directly support IG's strategic themes and deliver measurable performance improvements through advanced analytics and automation
- Champion data quality and governance practices across the organization, creating consistency and quality at scale
- Manage multiple complex data modeling projects simultaneously, ensuring critical business data models are delivered at pace while maintaining highest standards
What will you need for this role?
Experience
- 3+ years of demonstrated experience in analytics engineering or data modelling roles with strong expertise in building scalable data solutions
- Leadership experience or clear leadership potential with proven ability to mentor technical talent and build high-performing engineering teams
- Track record of implementing data quality frameworks, governance practices, or technical standards across teams or organizations
Technical Skills
- Expert knowledge of dbt including testing frameworks, documentation, and advanced modelling techniques
- Advanced SQL skills and deep understanding of data modelling concepts with extensive experience on cloud data platforms, particularly Google BigQuery
- Hands-on experience managing GCP analytics infrastructure as code using Terraform, including BigQuery datasets, Cloud Composer, dataflow pipelines, and IAM configurations
- Experience with Python programming for data processing and analysis
- Familiarity with data pipeline orchestration and workflow management tools
- Proven ability to drive technical migrations and establish best practices
Leadership & Personal Qualities
- Excellent technical communication and stakeholder management skills with ability to translate complex technical concepts into business value
- Strong collaboration skills and commitment to fostering inclusive, innovative technical cultures
- Ability to influence senior decision-makers and manage complex stakeholder relationships
- Delivery-focused mindset with capability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining quality standards
