With more than 9 million residents working in the IT sector, Hyderabad has one of the largest tech workforces in India. This has attracted a large mix of tech giants and home-grown startups to the region. Here are some of the city’s top software companies, which work in industries ranging from human resource management to digital advertising to cybersecurity.

Opendoor is a real estate tech company that functions as a process facilitator between homeowners, Realtors and buyers, allowing them to fast-track transactions safely. Because the company’s operations are scaled and automated, it can make unusually speedy offers, sometimes without costly standard processes like walkthroughs and onsite inspections. The company has a base in Hyderabad, where it is currently hiring engineers and recently onboarded a new India country head to expand its regional operations.  

 

Schrodinger is a healthtech company that makes software, molecular simulations and computational tools that are used by R&D scientists in their work on pharma, biotech and materials science innovations. Its drug discovery and biotech platform uses predictive technology along with physics, machine learning and informatics to allow researchers to work much more quickly and at a vastly greater scale than would be possible without such tech assets. The company’s Indian offices are in Hyderabad and Bangalore.

 

Vertafore makes software for the insurance industry, serving insurance carriers, brokers, agencies and managing general agents. Its insurtech products include tools for rating and quoting, credentialing and compliance, industry insights and client engagement. Its signature product is the AMS360 platform, which is built to serve as a management system that can cohere all the elements of an insurance business. Other tools layer on and integrate with AMS360, like AgencyZoom, which automates post-sale processes on policies, and Commercial Submissions, a software product for generating commercial quotes.  

 

Although it is headquartered in Seattle, Washington, the e-commerce giant’s largest corporate building in the world is located in Hyderabad. Boasting about 1.8 million square feet of office space, the campus can accommodate more than 15,000 employees — about one sixth of Amazon’s full-time India-based workforce of 100,000. Amazon has poured billions of dollars into its India business over the years, and plans to invest another $15 billion here by 2030, most of which is earmarked for the expansion of its AWS cloud business.

Hyderabad represents one of Google’s largest employee bases in the world, with many teams here from engineering to cloud to Google ads. The company first established its presence here in 2004, and reportedly has 10 offices in and around Hyderabad’s HiTec City area. The tech giant also began construction of a new office in 2015 that is set to open in 2026. Measuring more than 3 million square feet, the new campus will be Google’s second largest office worldwide, behind its headquarters in Mountain View, California.

As the world’s largest software company, Microsoft is a household name, offering an iconic suite of office and productivity tools like Word and Excel. It is also a prominent innovator in web search, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and much more. The company employs more than 200,000 people worldwide, about 7,000 of whom work at its campus here in Hyderabad. The city is also Microsoft’s largest data center region in India.

Of the 9,000 people Salesforce employs in India, most are at its Centre of Excellence in Hyderabad — representing its largest international engineering and customer success hub, according to the CRM provider. And in 2023, the company announced that it will be expanding its presence here even more. “India, and specifically Hyderabad, has become an integral part of Salesforce’s growth strategy,” Telangana’s IT minister KT Rama Rao said in a statement. “As India attains global digital leadership, we anticipate that Salesforce’s Hyderabad Centre of Excellence will soon become home to many more world-class innovations.”

Capgemini is a French multinational IT services and consulting company, providing a wide variety of services across cloud computing, AI, cybersecurity and enterprise management. It has a massive headcount, with nearly 300,000 global employees — more than half of whom are based in India. The company opened its office in Hyderabad in the early 2000s as a hub for its financial services business, and it now has teams working in everything from software development to machine learning.

Darwinbox operates a cloud-based human resource management platform, which helps with everything from recruitment to payroll management to people analytics. Its software is used by more than 850 companies across more than 100 countries around the world. In 2022, Darwinbox became Hyderabad’s first home-grown unicorn, reaching a $1 billion valuation after closing on a $72 million funding round. The startup is backed by several prominent investors, including Salesforce Ventures, Sequoia India and Lightspeed India.
